ESI's laser systems enable scientists to determine the age of asteroid fragments at a high level of precision, while also providing vital spatial information on the formation of minerals present in the samples at the micron scale.  As a result, scientists can measure isotopic ratios of chemical elements to rapidly calculate the age of asteroids in regions as small as four microns in diameter.  This capability provides new insight into the formation of Earth and our early solar system.
